WORLD’S BEST READY TO CHALLENGE FOR SIME DARBY LPGA MALAYSIA CROWN

Players representing 20 different nations arrive in capital for              ‘Malaysia’s most fun golf event’ at TPC Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 October 2016 – The best female golfers in the world descended on the Malaysian capital today ahead of the seventh edition of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, which will take place from 27th to 30th October on the East Course of TPC Kuala Lumpur at Alya Kuala Lumpur.

World No.1 Lydia Ko and defending champion Jessica Korda are just two of the big names set to compete for the US$ 1.8 million prize purse, while a record nine local golfers will represent Malaysia in one of Asia’s showpiece tournaments.

Prodigious world-beaters Ariya Jutanugarn, 20, and Brooke Henderson, 19, will definitely see themselves in the title race, while the likes of Ha Na Jang and Amy Yang, also in the Top 10 of the Rolex Rankings, are definitely worth watching. The tournament will see eight out of the top ten, and 40 out of the top 50 golfers, according to the LPGA Money List, compete to be crowned this year’s champion.

Former champion and runner up last year, Feng Shanshan of China will also be returning to the Malaysian capital as she seeks to reclaim the title she won in 2014.

Joining Feng as a former champion is fan favourite Na Yeon Choi, who won the 2011 edition of the tournament.

Adding some star-dust to the field are major winner Michelle Wie and former world no.1 Yani Tseng, who will be accompanied by World Golf Hall of Fame member Dame Laura Davies, as sponsor invites.

Rio Olympians Kelly Tan and Michelle Koh will be looking to fly the flag for Malaysia and give spectators something to cheer about, as they lead the largest Malaysian contingent in the tournament’s history. Other Malaysian players include Ainil Bakar, Aretha Pan, Nur Durriyah, Ashley Lau, Winnie Ng, Natasha Oon, and Jean Chua.

With an age range from 15 to 53, a total of 78 players from 20 different nations will compete in the 72-hole stroke play, no cut tournament.

Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Tournament Committee Chairman, Steven Thielke, said the committee is delighted to welcome such a strong and competitive field:

“Into our seventh edition of the tournament, the field continues to be one of the strongest in Asia and gets more exciting every year. We are delighted to welcome the world’s best golfers back to one of the top golf clubs in the world. With so many strong contenders, it’s impossible to predict who our next champion is going to be.

“We welcome the LPGA Tour to TPC Kuala Lumpur for what promises to be a very special edition of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia,” he added.
