Nur Durriyah and Cindy Lee-Pridgen are in prime position to secure starting places in Malaysia’s most prestigious women’s golf tournament following stellar first round performances in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Local Qualifying Tournament.

The 20 year old amateur Durriyah shot a first round score of 1-under par 70 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, leaving her with a one shot lead over second placed Malaysian Cindy Lee-Pridgen who carded a par-71 on the challenging East Course. The two head into the final round tomorrow, topping the Malaysian contingent looking to secure a starting place in one of the region’s flagship golf tournaments.

Speaking about her first round performance, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Development Programme student, Durriyah said, “The round was quite good but I managed to fumble the last few holes with a couple of bogeys. I won’t be changing anything for tomorrow – I’ll try to maintain my performance and hope I can qualify.

Tournament veteran Lee-Pridgen, who last qualified for the event in 2013, said, “It was a good day. Caddy and I worked well together and he’s been on the bag before. It was good to get more familiar with the greens again and tomorrow will be much the same. Fairways and greens and make some putts.”

A confident Jean Chua, currently one shot adrift from qualification in third place among the Malaysians, having carded a 1-over par 72 added, “If I can roll a couple more putts in tomorrow it’ll be great. Less bogeys – more birdies!”

At the top of the leader board, with an eye on the single place awarded to the winner – regardless of nationality – is 2014 qualifier Kanphanitan Muangkhumsakul. The 17 year old Thai took little time to pick up where she left off 12 months ago, dropping one shot on the front nine before sinking four birdies and a single bogey after the turn. With an opening round of 69, she enjoys a one shot lead over Durriyah and India’s Aditi Ashok.

The tournament saw a high number of registrations with 13 players from Malaysia, and the remainder of the 24 player field made up of competitors from India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore. Further back are Diane Luke (73), Michelle Low and Singapore’s Amanda Tan (74), and Aretha Pan Herng and Japan’s Kuriko Tsukiyama (75).

In a new format to the qualifying tournament, the first placed player, along with the top two ranked Malaysian players will receive automatic entries into the 8-11 October showpiece; in the event that the tournament is won by a Malaysian player, then three Malaysians will qualify.

Billed ‘the nation’s most fun golf event’, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2015 sees a host of new initiatives planned both on and off the golf course, promising four days of fun-filled entertainment complete with live DJs, food stalls, Kids Zone, Chip-4-Charity, and it’s very own KL Food Truck Festival.

With a free food voucher included with every ticket purchased, a Lucky Draw worth up to RM 500,000-, plus a host of other freebies on offer including exclusive golf umbrellas and Magnum ice creams, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2015 is certainly living up to its billing.
